Oh how many times can one be reminded that if “only” they’d listen things would be SO much better than to take the route of doing things our own way!  We may think of children when recalling that phrase being said in our hearing, or it may well have been US saying it to one of our children – and of course expecting it to have the intended outcome for them, when it didn’t for us…  Just getting right down to where each of us really live, but of course we have to be honest with ourselves and then get honest with God Himself, our Creator.

Rules, rules, rules…   Always a set of rules to go by – a listing of them in the Scriptures are called Commandments.  They could also considered laws when they are thought of in the context of society as a whole. They also, as mentioned in the first paragraph, probably come to our minds first in dealing with children, as they tend to come with consequences for actions either taken or not taken as expected.

A short definition of a Commandment is:

“A command; a mandate; an order or injunction given by authority; charge; precept.”
Webster’s 1828 Dictionary

Yet I find that the Bible definition of the word to be MUCH more than what we have come to expect in an ever shifting world of changing stands, stances and places on what is and isn’t acceptable 0r tolerated. In studying for the preparation of this Series, especially from an Encouragement perspective, the two verses which start the basis of the answer really gives me a depth perception change in my own mind, heart, soul and strength.  Take a look with me at Mark 12:29-30 | King James Version:

“And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.”
Mark 12:29-30 | King James Version

The question came honestly from the Scribe, as a little digging is done in the verses preceding these and those that follow.  Question is: Will we ask them AND accept the answer as our command?
