A dear friend posted the lyrics/words to the song “How Great Thou Art” on a social media site as she shared a concern close to her heart.  The focus because of it was verse number 4, which says:

“When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation, And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration, And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!”

Little did I know that a Hymn, that definitely stirs my very soul, would turn into a treasure trove of Bible study and discovering an origin of a Hymn that has weathered quite a storm to be one of the world’s top five (5) Hymns ever written.

At First Glance

The hymn (which began as a poem) is a call for the Christian to consider Who God is and who they are to our Creator God, Our Heavenly Father.  Singing this song with instrumentation (music) is one thing, but to start it off with any form of accompaniment, then dropping off to sing it a Capella, absolutely makes the rafters lift when God’s Children begin to realize just how Great He really is.  This Hymn is in the same category for me as “Because He Lives…”, as it focuses on what has been done for us, but we MUST be the participant to realize the full benefit of the words that the hymn talk about.

My comment on the post, of course after singing the ENTIRE hymn and having some “me and God” time, was the following:

That hymn builds from a deep place within me to a triumphant call to the Master – How GREAT Thou ART!!!

This Series is built around the very FIRST verse of the hymn:

“O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made; I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy pow’r throughout the universe displayed.”

There are seven (7) sets of single or double word draws which allowed for a deep scan of the Bible for verses which have made this Series.  It is absolutely incredible to me how God has used those in our past to make such an impact on our present, which potentially influences lives for Eternity.

It became very clear after looking at the first verse of the Hymn “How Great Thou Art” that definitions were not going to stand in the gap with this Series, it would have to be Scripture. Across seven (7) catch words/phrases, twenty-eight (28) times is found manners in which we can say “How Great” our God REALLY is to us.

From First Verse

My God
Thy Hands

What does it take for a Christian to stop what they (we) are doing to just contemplate and have wonder about all that God the Creator has made?  In that contemplation and wondering (not wandering keep in mind), what was done during that time?  Where would one go, look or check? In my wonder, contemplation and consideration – there was only ONE place to go: God’s Holy Word, the Bible.  What drove me to match the first verse of the Hymn to Scripture? Answer: the compelling conviction of the Holy Spirit to PROVE How Great God Really Is to me.  In order to be able to sing about How Great He is, a person needs to KNOW How Great He IS!  Now, not only do I have the words to the Hymn, there are now 28 verses/passages of Scripture to remind me of just How Great He IS!  It does NOT stop there, but I had to stop somewhere so this Series could be completed! No matter what is going on in your life, my challenge to you as a Christian is to learn to sing this song with “heart” knowledge, not “head” knowledge.  As you can see once you take a look, there are three more verses to this Hymn, more wonders to see, promises to claim and situations to “prove” God such that you will KNOW How Great He REALLY Is! Your soul will begin to sing…
